Scientia have created software that allows users to build their own remote control specified to their home. The user downloads the software and enters information about their electronics, including brands and models. According to Scientia the length of the process depends on the complexity of the system, but it can take as little as 10 minutes for very basic configurations..
Once the data is entered, users can upload their digital "remote" onto any type of computing device, including laptops and handheld computers. The system can also work on existing high-end remotes. The central application can control stereos, televisions, VCRs and DVD players, along with video cameras and lighting. Users can then control any of their devices through e-mail and instant messaging systems if they are away from home.
Scientia's technology, called Plexus, won an award for best innovation in the home integration systems category at the Consumer Electronics Show in December, but it can't be purchased by the average gadget head just yet. The firm is negotiating distribution deals and plans for the product to be on the market within a year.
