Dell and
Pioneer have unveiled plans to build burners that support the download-to-burn technology of Qflix. Now, too, have Lite-On.
Lite-On IT will begin volume production of DVD burners supporting Qflix, a technology jointly developed by US-based Sonic Solutions and Pioneer to allow consumers to directly download CSS-encrypted movies and burn them onto DVD discs, later in the fourth quarter of 2008, according to industry sources in Taiwan.
Lite-On IT has obtained an order from Japan-based Plextor for production of a Qflix-enabled 20x DVD burner, the PX-806SA, and will begin shipments this quarter, the sources indicated.
As Pioneer will launch two Qflix-enabled 20x DVD burners in the US market later this quarter, the internal DVR-2920Q at a recommended retail price of US$70 and external DVR-X162Q at US$115, Lite-On IT feels it is has an opportunity to offer Qflix DVD burners for sale under its own brand Liteon, the sources pointed out.
