Ritek, the second largest Taiwan-based producer of optical discs, has signed a Qflix technology and IP licensing agreement with US-based Sonic Solutions, a global provider of digital media software, according to press materials released by the companies.
The Qflix technology offers a means for content owners to release titles with CSS (Content Scramble System) encryption for custom production and sale over the Internet.
Sonic Solutions' Qflix program provides technology and IP for professional or enterprise manufacturing of DVD discs on demand, or for retail stores to enable creation of on-demand DVD discs at kiosks allowing consumers to download and burn movies and premium video content from PCs or consumer electronic devices, according to the companies.
Ritek expects to start volume production of Qflix DVD discs later in the first quarter of 2008, company spokesman Eric Ai pointed out.
In related news, Ritek is the first Taiwan-based maker to obtain certification from the DVD Forum for DVD Download Disc for CSS Managed Recording, new DVD specifications developed by the forum for write-once (recordable) discs allowing downloaded video content to be recorded to CSS-encrypted DVDs, Ai indicated.
